Every year we see it, we’ve all probably even said it. “New year, new you!” Sure, I get It and again, I’ve definitely been the girl saying it but why? This year, there doesn’t need to be a “new” you. But we can all strive to be better. We can be more intentional with our time, our words, our hearts. We can make better choices in our health and in our relationships. We can focus on more important things such as scripture and family. We can discover a better version of ourselves based off of what we’ve learned over this past year, mistakes we might have made, things we wish we had done or hadn’t done.
I no longer believe in the whole, “new year, new you” motto. It holds no value to me when I hear it, it’s a cliche at this point and sure, its cute and quirky and gives us this idea of a fresh slate but I think if I’ve taken anything away from my own life journey, the mistakes I’ve made, the hard times, the failures, the moments of defeat and uncertainty, they’ve landed me right where I am. Chances are if you take a second to reflect, you’ll see that in your own life too and you’ll relate to it in a way you maybe never really thought about.
We can all find ways to be better. To give more, to save more, to be more intentional, to be kind, to show love and forgiveness. We can find healthier ways to spend our time, we can pick up a devotional, we can call a family member, we can just be better and do better. So today as you’re reflecting and jotting down goals and resolutions just keep in mind, there doesn’t need to be a new you. See where you can improve, think about what you’d like to change or do a little differently and set realistic goals to achieve that better version. I hate to break it to you but you’re never going to be perfect and you’re always going to make mistakes and fall short- spoiler alert…it’s okay! That doesn’t mean there needs to be a new version of you but you can always strive to be better.
New year, better me.
